What Lays Ahead for Beastie?

Alton Towers is home to some of the UK’s best rollercoasters including Oblivion; the World’s first vertical drop coaster and the legendary Nemesis. But what if you’re only a meter tall? Kiddie coasters are a great way for youngsters to enjoy the thrills of the roller coaster experience, along with providing fun for the whole family.

Beastie at Alton Towers was always a popular attraction for those brave youngsters taking their first step towards “coasterdom”, not forgetting those people in need of increasing their coaster count! Unfortunately the park withdrew this attraction for the 2011 season after more than a quarter of a century in service, presumably due to reliability issues.

A source at the park told UK Park News in 2009 that there was a refurbishment plan in place for Beastie. We were unsure how accurate this information was but considering the park have opted to fence the ride off opposed to remove it, we believe the theory will stand. Currently the ride is fenced off by a 20ft metal fence, its queue line and signage removed, and the train has been removed from the track.

Hopefully we’ll see the return of this attraction next season, probably sporting a new train and possibly a re-theme, but until then here’s some photos of how the ride stands currently – quite a sad sight to see any coaster in a dis-used state.

I would guess that it costs a lot less to erect a 20ft fence than to dismantle a ride, so I really have very little faith that it’ll return. Besides, it really needs replacing, not refurbing.
