John Wardley Talks about The Smiler on Bolton FM

In a rare radio interview, John Wardley,  the chief ride designer at Merlin Entertainments who has also been responsible for Air, Oblivion & Nemesis, spoke about the Alton Towers’ new “world beating” roller coaster The Smiler, set to open this May.

Without revealing the top secret world first feature(s), John did elude to the fact that The Smiler is the most compact roller coaster in the world, which fits into the space where the Black Hole once stood comprising of a number of different elements including a 30m drop.

He added:
“If you think Nemesis is big this is about twice the size of Nemesis. But the unique thing about it is, whereas rollercoasters in the past have just played around with your body, this ‘marmalises’ you.”

Whilst “marmalisation” does sound intriguing, is this really unique following the viral campaign that was seen for the “Phsycho-coaster” Th13teen?
We’ll have to wait until May to find out.
