Alton Tower’s 2013 Roller Coaster to be Named “The Smiler”
UPDATE 21.01 13:25
Alton Towers Resort has confirmed that SW7 will not open until May 2013, some 2 months later than the original planned opening. Here’s what the resort had to say:
“We wanted to create some mystery around the name of our new world first rollercoaster, The Smiler. We’ve managed to baffle the nation and hopefully made a few people smile. The Smiler will be our biggest and most thrilling attraction the Resort has ever seen and we can’t wait for guests to join us in May and experience it for themselves.”
After months of speculation, and a prolonged teaser marketing campaign from the park, Alton Towers has today confirmed that the new 2013 “World Beating” roller coaster is to be named “The Smiler”. Even within the first few hours from being announced, the name has received criticism from enthusiasts and fans, however it remains to be seen how successful the name will be. Much will depend on the final marketing campaign for the ride, not forggeting the ride experience and physical themeing.
The coaster is located in X-Sector on the site where The Black Hole once stood, opposite the World’s First vertical drop roller coaster “Oblivion” which opened in 1998.
The attraction is manufactured by Gerstlauer (same manufacturers of Saw: The Ride at Thorpe Park) and is said to have a minimum of 8 inversions, last approximately 165 seconds and will contain a “world first” element. The Smiler is scheduled to open Saturday March 16th 2013.
